Yes, nine hundred quid for a phone is a lot. Then again. it’s £200 less than Apple wants for its comparable !Phone XS Max with half the storage (64GB). And we have to admit. you get a very nice bit of hardware for your money.

First of all, the S10+ is arguably the best attempt yet at a phone that’s nothing but screen. The ‘notch’ for the front cameras has been reduced to a Tic Tac-shaped blob at the top-right corner, leaving almost all of the huge 6.4in screen clear. Attention is drawn, though. when its looking for your face to unlock the phone: a snake of light chases around the lenses – Just one of many touches that elevates a nice-looking design to something really quite exquisite.

Huge, high-quality screen, exquisite design, superb cameras and a big price tag

The whole slim case is IP68 waterproof. and not only charges wirelessly (or via USB Type -C) but can charge your Galaxy Buds earphones (£150) wirelessly itself. There’s also a proper Jack if you prefer wired headphones. Android 9 runs on a top-end Exynos 9820 processor, which Is about as fast as you can get both for all-round and game graphics, and the S10+’s battery lasted an excellent 21 hours 17 minutes in our video-playback test.

That screen takes Samsung’s vivid AMOLED to new heights of brightness and dynamic range. covering 97 per cent of the sRGB range and even most of the bigger P3 color space. The back, also Gorilla Glass. comes In white. black or green with an iridescent ‘Prism’ finish that catches the light in a suitably expensive-looking way Pay £200 extra for a ludicrous 512GB of storage and you get black or white ceramic Instead. Either way, set into this is an impressive row of three cameras and an LED flash (pictured below left). But where’s the fingerprint reader? They’ve hidden it under the screen. where It works ultrasonically. though not quite as fast as we’d like.

Crowning all this are the superb cameras. On the back, the regular and 2x telephoto units are joined by an ultra-wide-angle lens, giving you lots of flexibility to shoot pictures with wonderfully natural color. Video goes up to 4K at 60 frames per second with optical stabilization, HDR and extreme slow motion. Both these and the twin front cameras offer adjustable portrait (blurred background) modes.
